RICHMOND, Ky. (LEX 18) — It seemed like Mark Elder picked up his signature win Saturday. A road victory at Jacksonville State, a team that has dominated the OVC, and EKU's first win over them since 2012. Two days later LEX18 has confirmed through a source that Elder will not be retained to be the Colonels head coach.
Elder led his teams to consecutive seven win seasons, but failed to make the playoffs during his tenure. It's a decision that has to be a shock to some, considering how his team finished off the season, and the positive outlook on the program looking forward. Elder told LEX18 just one week ago that there was no doubt this year's team was better than the last and that he was excited about the guys he had coming back.
EKU had realistic playoff dreams and a top 25 ranking entering this season, but a few one possession losses led to a 5-3 OVC record and they missed out on the postseason.
Elder finished his career 21-24 in his four years at EKU. His first two teams won a combined seven games.
