LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Wednesday morning marked the first day of school here in Fayette County for thousands of students across Lexington.

For many, their morning started at the bus stop. One group of elementary schoolers had a surprise guest on their bus.

"How are you? It's good to see you this morning! I'm Linda Gorton!" said the mayor of Lexington.

From kindergarten to fifth grade, students loaded the bus to Booker T. Washington Elementary all smiles for their very first day.

To make the morning extra special, the mayor jumped on board as well. Her job on the bus? To tell a story!

"It's called Maurice's Valises. And Maurice is a mouse that travels all around the world," Gorton said.

After a short ride down the street, the kids unloaded and received a copy of the book the mayor read.

A small gift to start off a big year.

"These children are wonderful. They're happy. They're excited about the first day of school and, you know, they have so much potential for the future. They are our future," said Gorton.
