CHICAGO, Ill. – A 20-year-old Chicago woman has been ordered to be held without bail on murder charges after police say she killed her two young sons.
Aleah Newell of Chicago allegedly left one of her sons in a bathtub and threw another from an 11th-floor apartment window before jumping herself.
Now, the mother is being charged with two counts of murder for the death of the boys, ages 2 years and 7 months.
Newell is also charged with attempted murder for stabbing her grandfather before she jumped from the building on Chicago's South Side.
Newell, who along with her grandfather is still hospitalized, didn't appear at Saturday's bail hearing.
According to court documents obtained by NBC News, Newell was running a bath at her grandfather’s apartment on New Year’s Day when the grandfather came in to use the toilet. That’s when she allegedly put the man in a chokehold, hit him in the head with a towel bar and stabbed him multiple times.
Afterwards, prosecutors say Newell attacked her 7-month-old son with a knife, plunged him into the tub of hot water and left him there with the faucet running. Then, Newell allegedly picked her 2-year-old son up and tossed him from their 11th story window.
Court documents say Newell then jumped out of the window herself, but survived and only suffered a broken ankle and wrist.
Newell had reportedly been diagnosed with a mood disorder after attempting suicide over the summer and had been staying at a homeless shelter.
