As China continues to reel from the effects of the deadly coronavirus, the rising cost of food is adding insult to injury.

The state-run news outlet Xinhua reported that the cost of food in China grew 20.6 percent year on year from January 2019 to January 2020. This also marked a 17.4 percent increase from December 2019 to January 2020.

While part of the reason for the price increase could be attributed to coronavirus, an African swing decease has also likely contributed to a huge jump in pork prices, according to CNN . The price of pork saw a 116 percent jump in price from year to year. Pork is considered a staple meat in the Chinese diet.

Vegetables had a 17.1 percent year to year increase.

Earlier on Monday, China announced that more than 1,000 have died from the coronavirus after Sunday was announced as the deadliest day since the outbreak began.
