WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — After heavy rainfall earlier this month, much of Whitley County is still recovering from the flooding.
Now that the water levels are going down, many homes are in need of repairs. Team Rubicon, a disaster relief group, has come to help.
The group arrived in Williamsburg on February 18. On their first day, the group went house to house making damage assessments and asking people if they would like assistance.
The real hard work comes in the days ahead; Rubicon Incident Commander Tim Anders said they "will tear out all the flooring... and take out any of the material that is behind the walls, that could be molding, that could be wet."
Team Rubicon is a national disaster response organization, and for this relief effort, they will have about 50 team members. While they are working they will be staying at the Williamsburg Fire Department on make-shift beds. Anders says it's all worth in order to give back.
"We aren't looking for anything in return," Anders noted. "It gives us a sense of purpose to get out there and do that."
