LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — CKY Hauling sanitation driver Richard Gray is warning all of his customers to be aware of thieves this holiday season.

Gray, who works for the Lexington-based company, said thieves are stealing holiday tips left for drivers.

"Unbelievably heartbroken that someone would do that," said Gray. "Discouraged. Feel like the Grinch is out there following us around."

According to Gray, customers typically tape an envelope with a card and money to their cans, but thieves have caught on to the pattern and are taking advantage of the kindness.

Gray told LEX 18 that he knows this is happening because he will find empty envelopes addressed to him in trash bins and the card will be missing.

He also said he can tell cards have been ripped off bins because the tape and a piece of the card may still be attached.

Gray said he wants his customers to be aware of this trend before they have their hard-earned cash stolen.

He said a good alternative includes mailing your card to CKY Hauling where staff will get them to the correct driver.

Gray also offered a second alternative:

"We work some pretty early hours so the customers don't always get to see us. If you get a chance to see your driver, maybe hand him his Christmas card in person," said Gray.
