(LEX 18) — If you're looking for a way to make some extra cash, the U.S. Census Bureau is in desperate need of workers in central, eastern and northern Kentucky in 2020.

You can make around $19 an hour, but the work would only last around four to five months.

They're hiring about 2,000 workers in central, eastern and northern Kentucky to help gather information for the 2020 census.

It is in the U.S. Constitution that every 10 years there must be a count of every living person in the United States.

About 100 open positions are managerial and based out of Lexington. The rest are "enumerator" positions, where you'll go door to door in your city or area.

“Let's say you didn't get your form or you misplaced it, somebody is coming around then to ask the questions that are on that form, and you can do that in person. But we need people to do that,” said Leslie Rodgers, Partnership Specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau.

Enumerators in Fayette County will make $19.50 an hour, though some rural areas may be slightly less. We’re told managerial positions will make $20 to $35 an hour depending on the position and experience.

One of the advantages of this work is a flexible schedule.

Enumerators get to make their own schedules, working part time or even 40 hours a week.

Government officials also want to remind everyone that this is important work.

Census data is used to allocate government funding and for other important studies.

“This isn't just about a job, it's about a way people can serve their community and can serve their country. There are only so many opportunities for people to serve their country, they can serve in the military, they can vote, they can also work on the census. It's a tremendous experience and they're a part of making history,” said Joe Shotwell, Manager of the Lexington Area Census Office.

The work runs from February through June or July. You have to be at least 18-years-old and pass a background check, and they recommend you have a smart phone.

Officials said once you apply they have to run a background check, you’ll likely hear back in four to six weeks.
