LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — On September 18 through 22, Lexington Parks and Recreation will collaborate with the community and designers of the original Shillito Playground to create a new playground.

The original playground was designed 26 years ago by Playgrounds by Leathers. The same team will not build a new playground at the same location this fall.

"The most important members of this team are our citizens," said Monica Conrad, Director of Parks and Recreation. Conrad also said that everyone is invited to help with the building of the playground.

They plan on using better building materials that will have longer use and they will also make the playground more accessible.

Volunteers are needed for the event, according to the city of Lexington. United Way of the Bluegrass is partnering with Lexington to help manage volunteer recruitment and sign-ups.

There are several different types of volunteers that are needed and volunteers should be 16 or older.
