CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — The Clark County Sheriff has confirmed that one has died in a house fire and explosion.

The fire and explosion occurred on Cunningham Lane in Clark County on Tuesday around 3:00 p.m.

The sheriff said a man, Mike Snowden, and a woman were inside the home when the flames started. Both made it out of the house safely, according to police.

Snowden, 72, went back into the home and never came back out.

According to community members, Snowden was a veteran and well-known.

Snowden's son-in-law, Marvin Powell, said that Snowden was a member of the local church and retired after working for Rockwell Internationl for three decades.

Snowden's wife, a retired nurse, was not hurt.

An oxygen tank exploded due to the fire, but was not the cause of the fire, according to police. Powell believes the cause of the fire could have been a gas line leak because his father had removed a gas heater earlier that day.

Powell wasn't sure why his father went back into the home, but he thinks that Snowden thought his wife wasn't out safely.
