Police officer placed on unpaid suspension after sending racist text messages to ex-girlfriend

OWENSBORO, Ky. (LEX 18) — An Owensboro police officer has been placed on unpaid suspension after admitting to sending racist text messages to his ex-girlfriend, according to the Messenger-Inquirer.

The paper reported that Officer Steven Phillips was suspended for 26 days beginning on July 3.

According to the paper, the allegations were investigated and Phillips signed a document accepting his suspension.

There has been no word on what was said in the alleged racist text messages.

The police chief said it did not involve any prior arrests made by Phillips.
