SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Police in Scott County have charged a teenager who they say attacked family members, shooting one of them along with a family dog.

The Scott County Sheriff's office said a 16-year-old boy was charged with first-degree assault, fourth-degree domestic assault and second-degree cruelty to an animal.

The suspect was not identified because he is a minor.

Sheriff's Sgt. Eddie Hart said the shooting victim remained in critical but stable condition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Authorities said the alleged assaults occurred about 10 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Barkley Road in Sadieville.

The shooting victim is a relative of the teen who was taken into custody, police said. The exact relationship between the teen and the others was unclear.

According to investigators, the teen attacked a female relative before shooting a male relative as well as a family dog.

Sources tell LEX 18 officials were able to coax the teen out of the home and sent him to UK Hospital for an evaluation.

"We don't know what started this altercation, but like I said, the family member stated she heard a pop in the back room. She thought it might be a balloon. That's when she realized the suspect was armed with a firearm," said Hart. "He then proceeded to shoot a family animal and then start assaulting family members."

The dog's condition was not immediately disclosed.

Police earlier had said the suspect was 17 years old.
