Keep those feet up, Mom, because a blogger has shared a fantastic idea for putting snacks within an arm’s reach for your children — and it’s the healthy stuff.
The Eager Teacher, also known as Sarah Eager, suggests using Tupperware or plastic storage products to organize the refrigerator door shelves. Instead of putting wrapped items or condiments in the door … make it the place for pre-washed fruits, individual cheese sticks and more!
Here’s The Eager Teacher’s brilliant hack posted on Facebook:
“After grocery shopping I always wash and prep all of the food that is considered self-serve in our house,” Eager says. “Self-serve for my kiddos means help yourself without asking and it’s always an okay snack (any time of day, bedtime snacks, etc.) It also helps me when I’m packing lunches and snacks, or as a side dish when dinner doesn’t include something they will definitely eat or if we have a busy/late night. There’s something about having things truly ready to grab that makes kids eat it.”
Yes! Are we all thinking, “Why didn’t I think of that?” It’s almost too easy, and we’re shaking our heads that such an obvious way to help our kids help themselves has been right in front of us.
You might need to measure the shelves in your fridge door before going out to buy the plastic storage containers. These items may be found at your nearest dollar store. Or, if you’re willing to wait a month or two, they are almost always one of the items retailers use to attract shoppers on Black Friday.
You’ll often see plastic containers in retail advertisements during the holiday shopping season, too. The sensible snacks the food containers will hold are just what children need as they are trying to curb the hunger they experience after school, just before dinner. They’re perfect tummy-fillers!
You could also use clear plastic cups, as Eager has done here. Keeping your snack containers see-through might just make them more tempting for kids!
There are so many styles of refrigerators out there, so if door storage isn’t your thing, perhaps a middle or lower sliding drawer will work for storing reachable snacks for the kiddos. You’ll just need containers that are flatter.
