LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– Although it takes place in Louisville, Lexington businesses are getting ready for  Derby weekend.

“It’s a really special atmosphere around here, you’re coming right off the Keeneland season, so everyone is in that mood. Everyone is really amped up. Going straight into Derby weekend, it’s a blast,” said Lexington resident Danny Perry.

People from all over make the trip to the Bluegrass to watch the horses compete at Churchill Downs. Some even book their stay in Lexington.

“I think it’s a different experience than if you were in Louisville, this central Kentucky experience has a lot to offer though. It’s refined, it’s a nice, more relaxed way to experience Derby but still be in the mix of everything,” said Lexington’s 21C General Manager Gabe Isaac.

Isaac said they’ll be packed at both their hotel and their Lockbox Restaurant.

He said that they start taking Derby weekend reservations a year in advance.

“We start taking reservations for next year, and then we really ramp up prep about a month out, start getting our supplies and then we fully schedule everybody to assist with our guests and make sure they have the best experience,” he said.
