LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– The Salvation Army relies on volunteers to help them feed around 700 people on Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving, the volunteers included University of Kentucky Coach John Calipari and his players.

“This is just a great way for people to volunteer and give back to the community,” said Major Tim Hinzman with the Salvation Army.

Coach Cal and his team gave back this year. In between serving meals, players took photos and signed basketballs for every fan who asked.

“Be able to spend time with them, to get to know their story and things like that, it really just warms my heart and warms my team’s heart. Just being able to be around them and give back on a day like today,” said UK Basketball player Reid Travis.

The team has volunteered on Thanksgiving for a few years now and players say that they really look forward to it.

“A lot of people don’t have the opportunity to make it out to a game because of situations or circumstances, but they still know our faces, they still know our names, they know all about the team and just how much they really care about us. The love is crazy,” said Travis.
