POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Kentucky State Police were investigating after a suspect was shot dead Tuesday night by an off-duty Powell County deputy sheriff after a chase.
Authorities said the shooting happened before 8 p.m. along Ashley Hollow Road. Police have not identified the dead suspect.
State police said area police were looking for a vehicle that had been involved in a chase. That's when, they say, an off-duty deputy sheriff spotted the vehicle and "made contact with a male subject who was operating this vehicle."
"After a brief struggle, the subject attempted to disarm the deputy sheriff," a state police statement says. "The deputy sheriff, during the struggle, discharged his agency-issued firearm, fatally striking the subject."
Powell County Deputy Coroner Tommy Mays pronounced the man dead.
The case remains under investigation.
