LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Student athletes are starting to practice for the upcoming fall seasons, but coaches and trainers are keeping a close eye on the heat for their safety.

Bryan Station and Bourbon County High Schools are practicing without pads, and there is 80 gallons of water on site. The layers are having to take mandatory breaks every 15 minutes.

The head trainer at Bryan Station High School said he's closely monitoring a player's every moves looking for signs of a heat-related illness.

"Lethargic, dizziness, amost like signs of concussions, they may make the same thing, just don't feel good, sick to you stomach, that's when it gets worse, when your sick to your stomach," said David "Jake" Jacobs.

Jacobs tells LEX 18 when the temperature hits 99% the players have to go without equipment and helmets and expects that to happen before the summer wraps up.
