CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — The Shemwell's lives changed forever when their four-year-old son, Marco, was hit and killed by a car after leaving a UK football game in 2018.

This is the second Christmas his family will spend without him, but his mother, Liz, said his memory lives on.

"I definitely feel him here, and his spirit and just being able to honor him and remember him in such a wonderful way is very special to us," said Liz.

On Saturday, his family and friends gathered at Winchester's Leeds Center for the Arts. Local bands played and toys were collected for the Marco Shemwell Foundation toy drive.

The toys will be donated to the Kentucky Children's Hospital Child Life Program, an organization that is very dear to the Shemwell family. The Child Life Program catered to their needs while Marco was in the hospital.

"I get emotional thinking about it, I know they aren't just toys, they are toys that will be going to children in the hospital in need," said Liz Shemwell.

The Shemwell family hopes to make this toy drive an annual tradition.
