The LEX 18 StormTracker Severe Threat Index has been raised to a Level 1, or a slight risk. Today’s warmth plus an approaching cold front from that big system over the Plains will fuel the potential for severe thunderstorms late this afternoon through the evening.

We have already seen severe thunderstorms across western Kentucky. Our window for severe weather will open up around 5 or 6 PM and continue past sunset. Damaging wind gusts top the list of storm threats. Even outside of thunderstorms, wind gusts will remain strong. Isolated tornadoes and hail are also possibilities.

Activity will start diminishing closer to midnight. It will be drier and cooler behind this strong cold front. Highs will fall from the 70s today to near 50° Friday. This weekend will be even chillier with highs only in the 40s, but it will be dry for all the St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
