LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The absence of big wedding celebrations and events means bad news for vendors like florists, who depend on those special occasions to create business opportunities.

Lexington florist Alexandra Pallos says this spring is going to be a hard one, but she hopes people will still look to her to brighten up these often gray days.

Her business, Alexandra Pallos Floral and Events, is typically ready for busy season as the spring begins with weddings and special events kicking into full gear. Weddings are particularly important for her.

“It’s a huge chunk of my business. It’s about 75 to 80 percent of my business," Pallos noted.

With those types of occasions called off or postponed, she's changing plans herself.

"When things like this happen, it doesn’t help anyone to sit there and feel sorry for themselves," Pallos said. "You just have to pivot and figure out different ways to market yourself. What else can you do differently?”

For Pallos, that's finding ways to teach her floral design classes online. Just last summer, she moved her business into a studio space on Big Run Road in Lexington so she could teach.

“I had always done flowers, but I did them out of my home. So I had an idea to not only provide floral services for the community, but I also wanted to be able to teach people how to do floral designs," Pallos said.

Even though the big jobs like weddings are off for now, Pallos hopes people will think of flowers to brighten someone's day, maybe even their own.

“If (you) need flowers delivered for Easter or for any celebration--birthdays, anniversaries--those things are still happening! People need pick-me-ups," Pallos said. "People aren’t feeling well, and those kinds of things make a difference. It’s important for people to know that we’re still here. We’re still trying to keep our doors open, and we’re still trying to serve our community and keep Lexington the great city that it is."
