CLAY COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Clay County woman accused of murdering her newborn child has been declared competent to stand trial by a judge, according to the Clay County Circuit Clerk.

Kentucky State Police say that Amber Bowling gave birth to a boy in December 2018. The arrest citation said that Bowling, who was 21-years-old at the time, placed the crying infant into a trash bag and threw it over the second-story banister of an apartment complex in Manchester. The newborn's remains were found by neighbors.

Neighbors told LEX 18 that they were shocked to hear the news as they didn't even know Bowling was pregnant.

The coroner said that an autopsy showed the infant died from injuries related to blunt-force trauma. Bowling's arrest citation said that the infant had a cranial fracture, fractured ribs, and that the infant's brain had bled.

Bowling was indicted on one count of murder. She has been determined fit to stand trial.

The trial is scheduled for May 19, 2020.
