VERSAILLES, KY. (LEX 18) — 31 families gathered at Callie’s Homestyle Restaurant in Versailles to wait for Santa Claus on Saturday.

Santa arrived just in time to hand out wrapped Christmas presents to dozens of children from low income families.

The gifts consisted of socks and winter boots donated by customers of Callie’s Homestyle Restaurant over the last few weeks.

There were also goodie bags with hats, blankets, candy and stuffed animals put together by volunteers and the American Legion.

“It feels good. It’s what Christmas is all about is giving back,” said Lillie Cox, one of the volunteers.

Parents were emotional as they helped their children tear through the wrapping, whispering ‘thank yous’ to volunteers.

Laughter and excitement filled the room as the kids began to show off their new toys and clothes to their friends.

It’s those moments Jessica Gunn hopes her son takes away from today.

“Friends and family are what things are about around the holidays,” she said. “Not just the presents, but getting together and having a good time and being around people you love.”
