MERCER COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) — Equipment is being blamed for causing a massive field fire in Mercer County.

US 68 was shut down for hours due to the fire that broke out Thursday afternoon.

The fire broke out in a field off US 68 near Chinn Lane. Viewers report hearing a large explosion and seeing a plume of smoke. Equipment, specifically a combine, sparked flames. Crews had to battle heavy smoke and low visibility as well as dry conditions.

Multiple emergency units from counties including Anderson, Jessamine and cities including Burgin and Harrodsburg came to fight the blaze.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
