(LEX 18) — Democrat hopeful for U.S. Senate Amy McGrath is starting the new year off on a family footing.
There's no mention of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell or any policy positions, but McGrath's newest ad, which she shared Thursday on Twitter, goes all-in on the trials of parenting.
The ad opens with a placid vision of domesticity that is announced as a feint after several seconds with the sound of a needle scratching a vinyl record and a title card reading: "Mornings with Amy, Erik and the kids!"
The scenes that follow show McGrath wrangling her kids through a mildly chaotic breakfast- and readying-for-school routine as jaunty music plays.
And while there's no mention in the ad of McConnell, the Republican leader she hopes to challenge in November, McGrath's tweet that accompanies it reads: "If I can handle getting these three ready for school, I can handle Mitch McConnell."
While that remains to be seen, McGrath first must secure the Democratic nomination. The former Marine fighter pilot is clearly leading the money and attention race so far but is facing challengers among her fellow Democrats. Among them is Mike Broihier of Stanford, also retired Marine and a former journalist.
McConnell, too, has several challengers but is far and away the favorite to win the Republican nod.
The primary election will be held May 19.
