LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — An investigation into a car accident involving a Lexington police cruiser and a civilian motorist is underway following a morning rush hour collision on Richmond Road.
“Nothing major as far as injuries, so that’s obviously the best news,” said Lieutenant Chris Van Brackel of the Lexington police department.
Van Brackel said the officer and the other driver were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The officer was even released within one hour.
Ironically, the officer was responding to an accident near I-75 and Winchester Road when the collision occurred in the intersection of Richmond Road and Man O War. A portion of Man O War was shut down for about two hours in order to tow the vehicles away, and reconstruct the accident. Lexington police plan to be diligent with their investigation.
“When we’re involved, there’s more eyes on it, so it’s a situation where it’s investigated more fully” said Van Brackel.
“If this was two people who were in an accident, and the injuries were minor, we wouldn’t bring the reconstruction team out here. But we know we have to have that transparency,” he continued.
Van Brackel said the accident could’ve been caused by the heavy traffic in this intersection, which left the driver unable to see and hear the police car as it was approaching.
Police would not release the name of the officer who was involved.
