RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University’s football team is ranked 24th in the HERO Sports Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Top 25, the organization announced last week.

The Colonels were ranked 25th in Lindy’s Sports Preseason FCS Top 25, which hit newsstands in May.  Eastern is just outside the Athlon Sports’ Preseason FCS Top 25, sitting at No. 27.

“We feel like this is going to be a breakthrough year for the Colonels. They were 7-4 last year with two FBS losses, one of which was very nearly a win (Bowling Green) – and nearly everybody is back.  If EKU can find that chemistry, watch out.  The talent is here,” HERO Sports said of this year’s Eastern Kentucky squad.

There are two teams on the Colonels’ 2019 schedule who are also ranked by HERO Sports.  Jacksonville State is sixth and Indiana State is 18th.  A third team, Southeast Missouri, is included in HERO Sports’ “Next Best” group of 10 teams.

EKU welcomes back 18 starters from last season’s 7-4 team that just missed out on the program’s 22nd NCAA Playoffs appearance.  Eastern Kentucky was one of just 27 teams in the nation to win seven or more games against Division I teams in 2018.

The 2019 season begins for the Colonels on August 28 at home against Valparaiso at 7 p.m.
