FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — At his coronavirus briefing Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear urged Kentuckians to be cautious during the holiday weekend.

The Kentucky Derby will be run Saturday without spectators and people may want to gather to watch the race, but Beshear says they should keep those gatherings to ten people or less.

"I don't think there's ever going to be an ask like this again," he said. "Do it for your family, do it for your community, do it for your own personal health."

He, along with Kentucky Department for Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack, also urged people to wear masks during any kind of gathering.

While Kentucky is at a plateau, Stack said the state may be on track for a record total of cases this week.

"We're at a higher level now and if we take our eye off the ball and it gets out of control we could find ourselves much more easily and quickly in trouble," he said.

The Kentucky Derby celebration will be completely different this year at Banners Sports Bar in Lexington.

The bar has expanded seating outdoors but continues to operate at a limited capacity and follow social distancing guidelines.

"That's really what you have to do, you just have to be as creative as you possibly can," said Manager Chris Geisler.

But they plan to make the best of it, he said, still offering drink and food specials for the 146th Run for the Roses.
