LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Spendthrift Farms in Kentucky is home to one of the great current family trees in horse racing, with two offsprings of a former great racer set to run on Derby Day this weekend.

It may be in the month of September, but nonetheless the Kentucky Derby proves you've made it to the top of the industry.

"We all began so low in this industry. So much hard work and long hours went into getting to this point, so winning a Derby would be very special."

Spendthrift Farms haven't had a Derby winner since Seattle Slew in 1977. This year they have two contenders, Authentic and Thousand Words.

"We're not choosy. If either gets there, it would be the thrill of a lifetime."

Into Mischief is sire to Authentic and also Oaks favorite Gamine. He never got the chance to run on Derby day, but this weekend two of his offspring will run in what could be a historic September Saturday for Spendthrift Farm.
