Mother's Day weekend is going to be a wild meteorological ride. Expect gusty showers to start things off Friday with highs barely into the 50s. Following that- a potent May cold snap (Blackberry Winter) invades the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and punches south of the Commonwealth. Widespread frost is expected and a spring freeze is likely Saturday morning (hard freeze for some) with record lows ranging from the mid to upper 20s to around freezing. Lexington's all time coldest May low is 26° set back in 1966. This has the potential to damage fruit trees and some spring crops as well as anything backyard gardeners have started. Take the necessary precautions. Sunday morning won't be quite as cold but we'll still see lows in the 30s and a frosty morning.
